DHS Extends TPS Re-registration Periods for El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua and Sudan

The Department of Homeland Security has announced an extension of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) re-registration periods for El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, and Sudan to 18 months. The re-registration periods were initially 60 days. Details on the TPS re-registration periods will be announced in upcoming Federal Register notices. The extensions do not change the previously announced TPS designation periods for these countries. They change the period during which existing TPS beneficiaries may re-register for TPS protection and related work authorization.

The issue

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has extended the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) re-registration periods for El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, and Sudan to 18 months, from 60 days. This extension will give existing TPS beneficiaries more time to re-register for TPS protection (Form I-821) and related work authorization (Form I-765).

TPS re-registration periods

Current TPS beneficiaries from the affected countries can locate their new re-registration periods below. The re-registration extensions do not change the previously announced TPS designation periods for the affected countries, or the timeframes for initial TPS registrations. New re-registration timeframes are as follows:

  • El Salvador
    • New re-registration period: Through March 9, 2025 (prior re-registration period was from July 12, 2023 through September 10, 2023)
    • TPS designation from September 10, 2023, through March 9, 2025
  • Haiti
    • New re-registration period: Through August 3, 2024 (prior re-registration period was from January 26, 2023 through March 27, 2023)
    • TPS designation from February 4, 2023 through August 3, 2024
  • ​​Honduras and Nicaragua
    • New re-registration period: November 6, 2023 through July 5, 2025 (prior re-registration period was November 6, 2023 through January 5, 2024)
    • TPS designation from January 6, 2024, through July 5, 2025
  • Nepal
    • New re-registration period: October 24, 2023 through June 24, 2025 (prior re-registration period was from October 24, 2023 through December 23, 2023)
    • TPS designation from December 25, 2023, through June 24, 2025
  • Sudan
    • New re-registration period: Through April 19, 2025 (prior re-registration period was from August 21, 2023 through October 20, 2023)
    • TPS designation from October 20, 2023 to April 19, 2025

Re-registration process for current TPS holders

Current TPS beneficiaries from the above countries can continue to extend their status and work authorization provided that they previously registered for TPS and their application was granted. Beneficiaries who wish to extend their TPS status must submit Form I-821 to USCIS during the above timeframes. Those who wish to extend their employment authorization must also submit a timely Form I-765 application for an employment authorization document (EAD) and the applicable fees (or a fee waiver application).

DHS will announce further details on the registration in the coming weeks.

Looking ahead

Extension of the TPS re-registration periods for El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, and Sudan means that current TPS beneficiaries will have more than a year of additional time to re-register. Those who receive approvals of their TPS and related EAD applications may continue to work and remain in the United States until the end of their country’s TPS designation period.

Prior to the conclusion of the TPS designations, DHS will review conditions in each country to determine whether the designation should be extended again or terminated.
